Guidelines for the EyesOnThePrize.org discussion list

1. Do not use this list or web site as a substitute for proper medical care. Please do not make any changes in your treatment or medications without consulting your doctor. Do not rely solely on any advice you receive on the EyesOnThePrize.org list or any discussion list or forum.

2. EyesOnThePrize.org reserves the right to moderate posts to the discussion list. The moderators and Board of EyesOnThePrize.org have the final say in all matters relating to the list hosted at YahooGroups and the main web site at http://www.eyesontheprize.org.

3. Advertising or spamming is not allowed. Spam is considered an effort to encourage people to visit a site, buy a product, or suggest any other activity which would benefit the spammer. The moderators and Board reserve the right to remove anyone spamming the list from the membership.

4. Before posting requests for political action, interviews, donations or any other advocacy events, please contact the listmoms at eyesontheprize-owner@yahoogroups.com

Since our objective is keeping EyesOnThePrize.org a "safe" place, listmom review and approval may be necessary for this type of post.

5. Flaming is also not allowed. A flame is a disrespectful post attacking others. Sometimes discussion can escalate into "flame wars", and if the persons involved do not desist, their posts to the discussion list may be moderated, or they may be removed from the list.

6. Please do not forward material to the list that you did not write. Often times, when someone posts information to the list, it is impossible to tell where it came from because poster just copies and pastes an article without telling where it originated. This makes evaluating the information impossible.

Also, a cut-and-paste of information violates copyright laws which prohibit republishing without permission. When a list member posts the text of an article on the list, it is published to every member on the list and stored in our archives. This is against copyright law, so the listmoms have to go in and delete those posts from the archives.

It is acceptable to post the link to the info with a short summary, followed by the URL to the site. This format will make the "copyrightpolice" happy and help everyone find more information and the source of the information.

Forwarded jokes, inspirational stories and similar material shouldn't be posted on EOTP anyway. If you haven't written it yourself and don't have permission to post it, it's best not to send it to the list.

7. Discussing our cancer journeys without including a spiritual dimension is difficult for many. EyesOnThePrize.org has adopted the approach of the 12-Step programs based on Alcoholics Anonymous to deal with this issue. As these support groups do, we encourage members to share their "faith, hope, and experience" but to do so using general terms that most people can translate in their own way: prayer, God, blessings, etc. The AA tradition is to describe, but not prescribe any aspect of their recovery, including religion. Applied to EyesOnThePrize.org, when we begin to speakin terms that belong to just one religion or philosophy, like "Christ" or "karma," then perhaps we should voluntarily check ourselves and speak more generally, out of respect for those having other beliefs.

8. Use proper netiquette. Please stay on topic. Use plain text, not HTML. Please do not SHOUT (use caps). Do not send attachments to the list (it will not accept them anyway), as doing so could result in rejection by the listserv's function. Try to send one-liners privately or not at all. Snip as much as you can from the original post when you reply, leaving only the part of the message you are responding to. Remember that those who are on Digest mode have to read through all the unsnipped repeated sections - this may help you in following this guideline :-) Also, try to remember that e-mail does not always reflect your emphasis or mood.

If you have technical issues, contact the list moderators at: mailto:eyesontheprize-owner@yahoogroups.com

9. Use correct terminology. Please refer to body parts by their proper names, not by slang terms or use of vulgarities.

10. Please visit http://www.eyesontheprize.org and browse the frequently asked questions (FAQs) and the Resources section (links and bookshelf).

Still have questions? Ask the list! We're here to help! :-)
